Darlene Kulig was awarded the CSEA/Berol Prismacolour National Art Scholarship awarded to six Canadian students entering Fine Arts based on outstanding potential in visual arts. Graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design she quickly moved into a commercial setting and within four years of graduating was running her own successful design studio.

Darlene began painting full time ten years ago. Her work utilizes synthesis or stylization - an approach that came into Eurocentric art from Japan in the mid 1800’s. Many of Canada’s great landscape painters (Lawren Harris being an obvious example) have done this. Darlene makes her approach her own by using strong (high key) colour and uniting smaller shapes into larger more powerful areas by controlling her values. Her love of the beauty available in the Canadian landscape is clear. What is especially impressive is that she has developed a unique very personal approach that "feels" Canadian.

TorontoHOME and Ottawa Life Magazine have featured Darlene’s award winning work, showcasing her vibrant, coast to coast Canadian landscapes.  Global Affairs Canada has installed a selection of Kulig Canadian Landscapes in Canadian Embassies buildings in North America, Europe, the Middle East and South America and The Mayo clinic has Darlene’s work hanging in the Rochester Clinic.  Pomegranate Communications has licensed Darlene’s
work to be reproduced as contemporary Canadian content in their international product line.
In spring 2019 the award winning RockyMountaineer commissioned Darlene to ride and paint the Rocky Mountains for a Canadian Rockies series and in December 2019 Darlene
was the featured artist in The AGO Art Rental and Sales Holiday guide.

Currently, Darlene is focusing her creative efforts on developing a recognizable, signature Kulig Canadian landscape as well as traveling with an eye for her next painting series. During Covid Darlene has created a line of fund raising face masks to support The Craig Kulig Memorial fund funding cancer research. A member of the Etobicoke Art Group and Neilson Park Creative Centre where she studies and paints, you can find her work in galleries across Canada and the United States as well as private collections around the world.

Early in my youth I developed a love for drawing. Everyday objects, faces and scenes would inspire me to draw and revealed to me a place of total contentment. Originally from Ottawa, I moved to Toronto to study at OCAD. Working for 20 years as a graphic designer and running my own studio has proven to be the training ground that developed a strong work ethic and a solid tool box. The designer in me loves simple shape and bold colour while the painter in me explores light, rhythm and personal connection. I continue to play with a careful balance between my intellectual and intuitive self.

When I travel I take hundreds of photographs which I use as reference for the authentic details in my work. I carefully design and draw out my painting on a dark ground colour before I start to paint. Whether I am painting a portrait, a stunning Canadian landscape or an urban street scene in Europe, my goal is to reveal the lifeforce of my subject.

While Henri Matisse said, “I don’t paint things. I only paint the difference between things, my goal is to capture “the thing about the thing.” In so doing, I attempt to capture the sentient quality of all forms around us. I hope that my work is both relatable and familiar to my audience.
